🎬 FYLM

How can we help?

Everything you need to know about ranking movies with FYLM.

Getting Started

1

Create an Account

Open FYLM and tap Sign Up. Enter your email address and choose a password. Once signed in, you'll land on the Global Rankings tab.

2

Rank Your First Movie

Tap the My Movies tab (popcorn icon), then tap + to search for a movie. Select it and choose how you felt about it — I liked it, It was okay, or I didn't like it. FYLM will then ask you to compare it with movies you've already ranked.

3

Find & Follow Friends

Go to the Feed tab (film stack icon) and tap the search bar. Switch to the People scope, then search for your friends by username. Tap Follow to see their rankings in your feed.

4

The Profile tab (person icon) shows your total ranked movies, watchlist count, followers, and following. Tap any number to expand the list.

Features

🏆 The Ranking System

FYLM uses a pairwise comparison approach rather than simple star ratings. When you add a new movie, you'll be shown a series of head-to-head comparisons — "Which did you prefer?" — against movies you've already ranked. This produces a precise, ordered list that reflects your true preferences.

Rating Tiers

Before comparisons begin, you pick an overall tier for the movie:

👍 I liked it Score 6.7 – 10.0
➖ It was okay Score 3.7 – 6.6
👎 I didn't like it Score 0.0 – 3.6

How Many Comparisons Will I Have?

The number of comparisons scales logarithmically with your library size — so ranking your 100th movie takes roughly the same effort as ranking your 10th. You'll never face an endless list of head-to-heads.

Tie? No problem.

During a comparison you can tap "Rank the same" if both movies feel equal, or "Skip (too hard to decide)" to move past a particularly tough match-up.

Adding a Note

After the comparisons you'll reach the Add to Post screen. You can write a note about the movie, tag friends you watched it with (Watched with @username), or post without any extras.

🍿 My Movies

The My Movies tab holds two sections:

  • Rankings — every movie you've ranked, ordered by score from highest to lowest.
  • Watchlist — movies you've bookmarked to watch (or rank) later.

You can filter both sections by genre. To save a movie without ranking it yet, tap the bookmark icon on any movie search result.

Tip: A bookmarked movie can be converted to a ranked movie at any time — just tap it and select Rank.

🌎 Global Rankings

The Global Rankings tab shows aggregated scores across all FYLM users. Scores are recalculated hourly, so newly popular films rise quickly. Use the genre filter buttons at the top to narrow the list.

Tap any movie to see:

  • Your personal score
  • Your friends' average score
  • The universal average across all users
  • Individual rankings from friends who've seen it

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change a ranking after I've submitted it?

Currently there's no in-place edit. To re-rank a movie, delete it from your Rankings list and rank it again from scratch. Your score will be recalculated through the full comparison flow.

Why do I have to compare movies instead of just giving a score?

Comparisons produce more accurate relative rankings. It's much easier to answer "Did I prefer Inception or Interstellar?" than to decide whether Inception deserves an 8.3 or an 8.6. The ELO algorithm translates your head-to-head choices into a precise numerical score automatically.

I bookmarked a movie. Can I rank it directly from my Watchlist?

Yes. Tap the movie in your Watchlist and select Rank. The movie will move from your Watchlist to your Rankings once the comparison flow is complete.

My global rankings look empty or outdated. What should I do?

Global scores update on an hourly schedule. Pull down to refresh the Global Rankings tab. If the list still looks empty, wait until the next hour mark for the recalculation to run.

I can't find a friend when I search by username.

Make sure you've switched to the People scope in the search bar (not Movies). Search results are limited to the closest 8 matches, so try a more specific username. Also confirm that your friend has already created an account on FYLM.

How are the color-coded scores determined?

Scores are color-coded by tier: green for movies you liked (6.7–10.0), orange for movies you thought were okay (3.7–6.6), and red for movies you didn't like (0.0–3.6). These tiers are set when you first choose how you felt about the movie.

How do I delete my account?

Go to your Profile tab, tap the menu icon in the top-right corner, and select Delete Account. You'll be asked to confirm. This action is permanent and cannot be undone.

How long do notifications last?

FYLM shows notifications for activity from the last 3 days. Older notifications are automatically cleared.

What does the IMDB rating shown on a movie mean?

The yellow star rating is IMDB's public score pulled directly from the movie database — it reflects crowd opinion across all IMDB users, not your personal FYLM score.

Can I use FYLM on Android or the web?

FYLM is currently an iOS-only app. Android and web versions are not available at this time.
